REQUESTING ARTICLES

Requesting Articles NOT Available from Galileo

Articles that are not available online can be obtained through intercampus or interlibrary loan. Photocopies or digital files (PDF) of the article are sent to you, and are yours to keep.

To Determine Whether to Use Intercampus or Interlibrary Loan

    • Go to the Shorter Libraries Periodical List. This is a list of all physical periodicals held by the Shorter libraries. You can also search the A – Z Journals list on GALILEO.
    • Use the Periodical List to determine whether or not the Shorter Libraries have physical access to the publication in which your article appears. For example, if you were looking for an article published in the journal Educational Leadership in 1994, you would first scroll down to the entry for that publication, which looks like this:

**EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP: 1943- (*MFLM 1971-1989, MFC 1990-1996)

This annotation tells us that Shorter has paper volumes of this journal beginning in 1943, that we have the volumes from 1971 to 1989 on microfilm (miniature photographic copy arranged on film that is wound on spools), and that we have the volumes from 1990 to 1996 on microfiche (the same as microfilm, except on flat sheets).

The two asterisks preceding the entry indicate that we have the publication in microform only beginning in 1990. When determining ownership, be sure to check to see that Shorter has not only the journal title, but also the volume for the particular year in which your article was published. In this example, we see that Shorter holds Educational Leadership for 1994 in microfiche; had our article been published before 1943 or after 1996, we would have had to look for it at another library.

To Request an Article through Intercampus or Interlibrary Loan

If your research above indicated both that Shorter held the journal title in question and that the article you need falls within the date range of our holdings for that title, then fill out the Intercampus Loan Request for Articles Form, which is posted on Scholar for CAPPs students Click on the link and enter your SCHOLAR ID and PIN. Then click on the Intercampus Loan for Articles link located under LIBRARY REQUEST FORMS.

If Shorter does not own that particular title and/or does not own the volume for the particular year in which the desired article was published, then fill out the Interlibrary Loan Request for Articles. Click on the link and enter your SCHOLAR ID and PIN. Then click on the Interlibrary Loan for Articles link located under LIBRARY REQUEST FORMS.

REQUESTING BOOKS OR MUSIC SCORES OWNED BY ANOTHER CAMPUS

Requests (Holds) for books and music scores located at another Shorter library can be splaced online from any location with internet access. This is known as an intercampus loan. Most intercampus loans are fulfilled within the week.

To Request a Book through Intercampus Loan

  • First, perform a search for the item in the Shorter library online catalog.
  • If you find an entry for the item you need, click the link in the upper right hand corner of the online catalog to login.
  • Now, click on the word ‘Available’ from within the record of the item (book, score, DVD, etc.) you wish to borrow. You will then be prompted with the question ‘Do you wish to place a hold on this item?’
  • Answer ‘yes.’
  • The lending campus will now receive an email to send the item for you to your campus.
  • You will be notified when the item arrives for pick up.
  • Please pick up your requested items for the Assistant Resource Facilitator at your campus as soon as you are notified of its arrival.

Rome students may pick up materials at the library circulation desk. Please return intralibrary loan materials promptly.

REQUESTING BOOKS FROM ANOTHER LIBRARY
(Not a Shorter campus)

When Shorter University borrows an item on your behalf from a distant library, we call this an interlibrary loan (ILL). Interlibrary loans can take from one to several weeks to complete. The loan period for ILL books generally ranges from 2 to 3 weeks, depending upon the policy of the lending library.

To Request a Book through Interlibrary Loan:

  • First, perform a search for the item in the Shorter library online catalog.
  • If you  find the book, no interlibrary loan request is necessary. If you don’t find the book in our catalog, go to GALILEO, and select WorldCat from the database list. Search for your book’s bibliographic information ( ISBN, Publication Date, Author, Title, Publisher, etc.) to complete the Interlibrary Loan Request form. Then log into Scholar, and click the link for Interlibrary Loan for Books under the ‘Library’ tab.

When your interlibrary loan materials arrive at your campus library, you will be contacted by a campus representative. Pick up your materials from the Assistant Resource Facilitators at the Cobb, Duluth, and Riverdale campuses, and at the library circulation desk in Rome. Please return interlibrary loan materials promptly.
