Instrumental Music

Horn player in Shorter Marching Hawks Band

Welcome to the Shorter University instrumental Music and Band Program!

We are starting our fourth year in the fall of 2010. In our second year (2008-2009), we performed a full halftime show at every home football game, performed as a pep band for selected home basketball games, and also performed as a jazz ensemble. Our Colorguard attended its first competition in March 2009 and one two first place trophies!

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education with an emphasis in Instrumental Music

In the fall of 2009, Shorter offered an instrumental emphasis to the Music Education degree for the first time. This is an important addition to our music department and we are excited about applying our excellent tradition in training music teachers to the band world. This degree will lead to the Georgia Music Certification and is excellent training for a career as a band director. Shorter will be accepting new students for this program taught by professional musician-teachers.

We have scholarships to award prospective band directors who want to pursue an instrumental music education degree, and we also have band scholarships available for non-music majors who join the Shorter University Marching Hawks.

We offer students the opportunity of seeing up close how to build a band program from the ground up. If you would like additional information regarding our program and scholarship availability, please contact Ms. Beth Taylor, Director of Bands at
